June 1: RHP claimed off waivers by Phillies
Tarnok, who was rated Oakland’s No. 13 prospect by MLB Pipeline, was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Saturday. The right-hander was on the 60-day injured list with Oakland and rehabbing from a hip injury with Triple-A Las Vegas, where he made six appearances and allowed 11 runs on nine hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Tarnok was one of five players acquired from the Braves as part of the Sean Murphy deal in December 2022.

Initially fearing a long absence for Erceg, the A’s are optimistic after the right-hander flew back to Oakland and was diagnosed by team doctors with a mild strain in his right forearm. A’s manager Mark Kotsay said prior to Friday’s series opener in Atlanta that Erceg could resume throwing “sooner than later,” but there is no timetable for a return. Erceg’s placement on the IL is retroactive to May 26.

Jiménez returns for his second stint with the A’s. The right-hander was a part of Oakland’s Opening Day roster and posted a 3.68 ERA in 15 relief appearances before getting optioned on May 7 to work on his mechanics. He pitched well with Triple-A Las Vegas, recording a 2.00 ERA while holding opponents to a .488 OPS in eight relief appearances, with 12 strikeouts and five walks in nine innings. He will slot into a high-leverage role in the A’s bullpen.

Basso, rated Oakland’s No. 20 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is expected to provide long relief.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (strained right forearm)

Erceg’s placement on the 15-day injured list came on May 31 but is retroactive to May 26. While there is no timetable for a return, the A’s are optimistic that the right-hander will resume throwing “sooner than later” and avoided a worse injury, per manager Mark Kotsay. Erceg has performed exceptionally as a setup man to closer Mason Miller, posting a 2.86 ERA in 21 relief appearances, with 27 strikeouts in 22 innings. (Last updated: May 31)

Muller was scratched from his scheduled start against the Rays on May 30 and placed on the injured list. Currently shut down from throwing, he will be reevaluated by team doctors in Oakland the week of June 3 to determine when he might be able to resume a throwing program. Boyle made his second rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas on May 29. He struck out three batters in 2 1/3 innings but also allowed four runs on four hits and four walks. He threw 43 pitches, 25 for strikes. Boyle's four-seamer, which he fired 28 times, averaged 100.1 mph. Manager Mark Kotsay said earlier in the day that Boyle feels like he has "turned a corner" with his back injury, which landed him on the 15-day IL on May 6. (Last updated: May 30)

After seeing team doctors in Oakland on May 14, Wood was diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis and was expected to be shut down from throwing for at least 10-14 days from that date. Medina allowed two runs and struck out six over 3 2/3 innings during his third rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas on May 28. He threw 44 of 72 pitches for strikes. His fastball averaged 97 mph and topped out at 100.2 mph. Medina rejoined the team on May 30 and made it through a bullpen session prior to that day's series finale against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Newcomb threw a scoreless inning of relief and struck out two with the club's Arizona Complex League team on May 18. It was his first game action after he pitched a sim game on May 10 at the Athletics' Minor League complex in Arizona. Waldichuk underwent a successful Tommy John surgery and internal brace procedure with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on May 15. After Hernaiz exited Oakland’s loss to Texas on May 7 after landing awkwardly on the first-base bag while trying to beat out an infield hit, an MRI exam revealed a “severe” sprain of his left ankle.
